Forum thread at http://www.idmforums.com/showthread.php?t=129326

This was released over a month ago, so this post isn’t exactly up to the minute. I freely admit its taken me a while to get around to this. I knew I was going to need some proper sitdown time to give this the attention it deserves. That would be now.

I liked this EP.

I made a point of listening without having read the accompanying PDF which gives insight into RFJ’s background. That was for after. Partly I feel that music should be able to stand on its own, partly I wanted to experiment on myself to see if it changed my experience. I’ve also avoided the growing thread on the IDM forums so that my response is not coloured by what’s written there. So: 2 listens through entire EP, read accompanying PDF, then some more listens.

tip-011

This music baby is now out in the world! Downloadable at http://roo-stercogburn.bandcamp.com/album/the-incredible-patriot

Scary that its 2.5 years since I made any musics downloadable. And yay for this comment on IDMf by Vlantis:

“Once I get a new computer, I’m going to cover the shit out of Captain Courageous.”

Couldn’t really ask for a nicer response :)

Field Recordings February 27, 2014

Last week I decided I was going to make some field recordings for IDMf.

Because my time to spend on this is somewhat limited I’m having to plan it all out in advance and schedule it over the next few weeks. I’ve more or less got it all worked out in my head and I think this should result in a sample pack of between 45-50 original samples, hopefully ready towards the end of March.

Anyone else interested in creating or donating towards IDMf sample packs should check out the thread at http://www.idmforums.com/showthread.php?t=129872

The Incredible Patriot - EP Cover Complete

The text was finished on this last night and the final image uploaded to Bandcamp this morning, ready for EP completion. Appropriately, it uses the same font as the Whitehouse logo text.

Upcoming EP: The Incredible Patriot February 24, 2014

I’ve been working on this EP for a little while now. It started with this track:

A couple of months or so ago, I posted it up on Soundcloud and shared in the IDMf Listening Booth for some feedback.

http://www.idmforums.com/showthread.php?t=127668

As usual though I’d be going around listening and singing along. I came up with what started out as a backing vocal for the chorus. However, when I recorded it, it turned out to be a bit much and I decided to make a second track with the attempted backing vocal as the main vocal. It worked, and way better than I expected. At that point I decided to make an EP. So the second track is actually at the same BPM as “Non-Interference” and you can overlay the choruses on each other.

The third track is more or less complete and I’m going through the checking process. Sometimes this means leaving it for a few days so I can come back to it with fresh-ish ears.

Aiming to get the whole lot done and released in March. We’ll see how that schedule works out ;)

The Malm: Select EP #01 February 21, 2014

Out today and freely downloadable from Bandcamp, this EP has 4 tracks and has the very excellent Waistcoat For Slugs on it, as well as some cool experimental tracks.

For those that don’t know, The Malm is  a duo made up of Martin “McFly” Standen and Benwaa based in darkest Wales. Rather than bore you with my inept prose, here’s how these guys describe themselves:

“The audio delights and aural pleasures that are MaLm cannot be placed in any genre or pigeon-hole as the MaLm is ever changing. Never the same at any given moment, the MaLm is in us all, flowing and evolving to it’s own rhythms and melodies. The concept of Malm can applied to and found in anything living or inanimate, if it exists it holds MaLm within, if it does not then it is also MaLm We are MaLm”

I have no idea what I just read. But I like the music.

This Is Good Tea

Tomorrow (well ok its not far from midnight here in the UK, so ‘tomorrow’ but not by much), the latest compilation album from the IDMf netlabel will be released. This album contains contributions from some of the best on the IDMforums, and inexplicably, one of the worst. You can spot him at number 3 on the tracklist.

Despite being on the complation, I’ve not heard it myself yet, only the track I myself submitted. I’m really looking forward to hearing the other tracks and amazed to be on there with the others.

For my own track, I couldn’t resist some wimpy synthpop complete with TB303-ish arps, big filter sweeps and the de rigueur 2-part riff to herald the start of each verse.

Link to the IDMf Netlabel at the bottom of the post.

This only took a few days from start to finish. Started off as reggae(!) and then disappeared down the grunge rabbit hole for a while before coming back I guess as a kind of post rock / grunge-lite track. Its about 90% guitar. I played most of the layers as guitar, instead of using synth so some of the guitar parts are not at all in the style of normal guitar-playing. Some are straight forward chords of course, though usually on the backbeat or ‘answering’ something that comes before it.

I didn’t have to go crazy on the automation. There’s a lot of resampling so I didn’t make my CPU cry but aside from a little work on volume levels, the only automation is on the synth chords that appear in the break and at the end.
